Front End Web Developer

Position Summary

We’re looking for an experienced front-end developer to build and maintain our digital products, including our website (, campaign landing pages and emails, and intranet solutions. You will play a central role in shaping and delivering rich, engaging digital experiences for our donors, alumni, and friends. We’re a newly formed Digital Strategy & Services team within Stanford’s Office of Development, located on-campus in the Alumni Center. 

To be successful in this role, you will:

-Build new features for and enhance the front end of our website, landing pages and web applications

-Create simple and intuitive interfaces that delight our donors and friends

-Turn concepts into wireframes and working products
-Prototype new features and iterate on what works and what doesn’t
-Analyze site/page speed and help provide performance solutions

-Research, test, and benchmark new technologies and modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React or Angular)

-Play a key role in digital design and UX/UI efforts

 About you:

 -You have a strong command of HTML, CSS, and Javascript, and write semantic, scalable code

-You have experience building responsive large scale websites, including use of front end frameworks to create rich asynchronous web applications

-You can flex different skills based on the project need, from full-stack web developer to UX/UI designer

-You know when to use the right framework for the right purpose (and can articulate why)

-You thrive in a highly collaborative, consensus driven organization

-You’re a self-starter who loves taking initiative and seeing things through to completion

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Sought:

-5+ years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience

-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

-Demonstrated significant experience developing for web content management systems

-Demonstrated significant experience in developing websites and web applications using open source tools, languages, libraries, and current standards-compliant code

-Demonstrated ability to write, compile, test, debug, and deploy software on UNIX-like platforms and web servers

-Knowledge of web analytics tools and related analyses
-Ability to design and manage relational databases
-Ability to design and implement web services
-Ability to design and integrate complex web enterprise systems

-Familiarity with browser devices and platform differences and idiosyncrasies, and ability to develop workarounds to accommodate specialized user/client needs and device platforms

-Understanding the importance of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 AA

Additional skills ideally sought (but not required):
- WordPress or Drupal
- Agile / scrum methodologies
- Google Analytics

Physical Requirements*: 
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Frequently sitting.

  • Strong visual acuity.

About Digital Strategy & Services and the Office of Development:


Digital Strategy & Services team is a newly-formed unit within Stanford’s Office of Development, located in the Arrillaga Alumni Center on the main campus.

 The Office of Development (OOD) supports the goals and purposes of Stanford University. OOD staff members, working in concert with academic leadership and volunteers, strive to enhance, over the long-term, useful gift support to Stanford.  In the process, development staff establish and nurture relationships with students, alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations and associations.  The objective is to create life-long relationships that enable the university to convey its aspirations and needs to constituents who can help Stanford achieve its goals.
